Lead Service Line Replacement Information

Lead in water from old lead pipes can pose serious health risks to you and your family and/or residents. To safeguard public health, the City of Lafayette Water Works and/or its approved contractors and/or subcontractors (collectively “Water Works”) is proactively replacing identified lead service lines throughout the city. In compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Indiana, this service is provided at No Cost to you.

Right of Entry Authorization

By signing this Right of Entry Authorization, you:

Grant permission to the City of Lafayette Water Works and its approved contractors and/or subcontractors to access your property for the purpose of replacing your water service line.

Agree to inform Water Works of any hidden hazards on your property that could affect the work.

Agree to provide unimpeded access to your interior shut-off valve (i.e., remove any items blocking the area, such as boxes or furniture, and, if necessary, cut away drywall to fully expose the valve).

What to Expect

Notification:

Water Works will contact you to notify you of the date of your lead service line replacement about two weeks ahead of time.

Replacement Work:

Water Works will replace the lead service line water pipe at your property.

Workers will enter your property and your residence if necessary to do the replacement.

Property Restoration:

Water Works will try to leave your property as close to how it was found or better.

Water Works may need to remove fences, shrubs, sidewalks, driveways, stones, sod, flowers, plants, or other permanent things on your property.

Water Works will clean the exterior work areas and do temporary and permanent restoration, which may include, if impacted:

Replacing brick, concrete, granite, or asphalt curbs, sidewalk, pavement, driveway, and retaining wall areas and overlay.

Seeding, sodding, and plant replacement.

Water Works may schedule the permanent restoration work at a different time.

Water Works will try to avoid trees, shrubs, and living plants when possible.

Post-Work Support:

Water Works will provide a water filter, lasting six months, to you or the residents of the property, along with instructions for flushing faucets to remove any potential lead particles.

Warranty:

Water Works warrants the workmanship of the installation of the service line for a period of 12 months after the completion of installation, with Water Works’ liability limited to the cost of repairing or replacing the Customer service line.

Important Recommendation:

We strongly advise working with a licensed plumber to inspect your building for any additional lead pipes. If any are found, we recommend considering their removal for the safety of your household.
